ABOUT

Born in 1987, Cherin Sim is a Singapore-based painter whose artistic journey began in early childhood, sculpting and creating art with an innate passion.

Deeply inspired by the mastery of Renaissance artists and the bold expressions of the 1960s Pop Art movement, Cherin developed a unique style that merges classical techniques with contemporary sensibilities, especially consumer culture. Her fascination with these artistic movements shaped her vision, leading her to pursue art as a career after her Masters (Fine Art) studies.

Cherin has been creating and painting designs on luxury leather goods for private clients and collectors for more than 15 years making her the leading Marquage Artist in Asia.

TECHNIQUE

From an early stage in her art career, Cherin immersed herself in the painting techniques of the old masters. She modified and reinterpreted them in new ways to create her unique personal style and contemporary finish.

Her work possesses a surrealistic quality, acting as a mirror that invites viewers to explore their own identities. Each painting becomes a moment of reflection—both literal and symbolic—drawing the audience into an intimate dialogue with the art itself.

PHILOSOPHY

A key theme in Cherin’s art is the influence of consumer culture, particularly in the realm of fashion and branding, and how these forces shape a woman’s sense of self. Fascinated by the pervasive presence of luxury brands and their impact on identity, she explores the idea that women are often reduced to symbols of the clothes and accessories they wear.

Through her work, Cherin challenges societal notions of femininity and materialism, portraying women not as individuals, but as representations of the consumer goods that define them in the public eye.

By stripping away defining facial features and replacing them with fashion items—handbags, shoes, and designer pieces—her paintings confront the viewer with a striking question: In a world dominated by branding, how much of a woman’s identity is truly her own? Through this exploration, Cherin’s art provokes thought and reflection, compelling audiences to reassess the narratives that shape self-image and societal expectations.
